HISTORY OF
NEW HORIZON OUTREACH MINISTRIES

On the first Sunday in December 1987, Elder James Faulks began his pastorate of New Horizon Outreach Church of God in Christ. Accompanying him from the mother church was his wife Evelyn, two daughters Felicia and Christina, Mother Carolyn, his sister Sylvia, nephew Sean and niece Sheri. The first service was held at the Best Western Center Inn located on Military Highway in Norfolk. Fifteen people were in attendance which included the pastor’s brother, Larry and his first cousin, Dyra and her family.

The following Sunday services were moved to the Hunton YMCA building located on Charlotte Street in Norfolk. There our morning service was held, as well as Sunday school classes for all ages. Sunday evening services and Wednesday night Prayer and Bible Study were held weekly at the pastor’s home. In spite of the limited facilities, God added to the church and through the charitable spirit of the members and faithful supporters the necessary funds were provided to sustain the church and we were able to start a saving to purchase a church building.

On August 27, 1989, to make provision for better facilities, the church services were moved to the Iron Workers Union Building, Va. Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Virginia. Besides Sunday morning services, a variety of different events were held at that location. Some of the events were our 1st play “Defiance”, a magic show, a Black History program, Easter programs and Easter egg hunt, and Our Pastor’s first anniversary service.

God continued to be with the church and favored us in our many endeavors. Because of the faithfulness of the people in giving, fundraisers and frugal administration, the church was able to purchase a church building. On March 21, 1993 the church family moved to its present location, 1575 Kerrey Avenue, Norfolk, VA. And less than a year later, on March 13, 1994, the church purchased the building next to the church as an annex. The building was renovated and is now used for multi-purposes. It is used for Sunday school classes, Food Pantry and many social events.

Our Pastor being directed and inspired by God, lead the congregation in a major project to renovate the sanctuary in the spring of 1996. The project was a great success, and the sanctuary was enlarged and beautified with all new furnishings and new carpet. Our Pastor had the burning desire to further the work of God even the more and in December of 1998, with God’s flavor and blessings, we stepped out by faith, launched a building fund drive and were able to pay off the mortgage of the church.

Being lead by God and to strengthen the ministry in January of 1999 Pastor Faulks came off of his secular job in order to work full time in the ministry. To further strengthen the ministry, in July of 2003, Evangelist Evelyn Faulks was lead by God to come off of her secular job to work alongside her husband in the ministry.

In January of 2005, we paid off our mortgage on the annex building, which was our last mortgage. Accomplishing this task enabled us to begin to prepare for our next phase of ministry.

In November of 2008, we were able to purchase the building beside the annex. We are looking forward to our next phase of ministry, to see what God is going to do through this ministry and where God is going to carry us from here.

The year of 2014 came with our 3rd building being paid off. Praise God for moving us forward.

Our daycare project began in November 2015. It was a longer process than we anticipated but God made a way in spite of the delays. The parking lot at the church, annex and daycare has been completed along with handicapped ramps.

The daycare was officially opened in September 2017. We can have at least 21 children which doesn’t include before and after school children.

Pastor Faulks stands firm on the Word of God and continues to “Cry loud and spare not” telling men and women, boys and girls, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Look where God has brought us, look how far we’ve come. We’re not where we want to be, but we’re not where we use to be. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord, for what you’ve done.
